CR Steel vs Coated Steel for Home Appliances: Which Grade Should MSMEs Choose?

Choosing between cold rolled and galvanised steel affects forming, finishing, corrosion protection and production cost. For appliance component manufacturers, the decision depends on the part’s specification, moisture exposure and the finishing process available on the production line.

This guide compares Tata Steelium CR and Galvano coated steel for washing machine, refrigerator and AC components, outlining what MSMEs sourcing CR steel for appliances in India should assess before placing an order.

Understand the Difference Before Comparing Grades

Cold rolled steel describes steel processed through cold rolling. CRCA steel refers to cold rolled close annealed steel, with annealing used to achieve the required material properties after rolling.

Galvano is galvanised plain steel with a zinc coating. Here, “coated steel” means zinc-coated steel, rather than prepainted steel or every other coated product category.

This distinction matters because CR and coated steel are material categories, not individual grades. Within either category, buyers must select the appropriate grade, thickness and surface specification.

Tata Steelium offers consistent mechanical properties, thickness, flatness and surface quality, alongside formability and weldability. Galvano offers a zero-spangle surface and uniform zinc coating for applications that require corrosion resistance. Both have relevance to appliance manufacturing.

Compare the Requirements of the Component

Buying consideration Tata Steelium CR Galvano coated steel
Corrosion protection Requires a suitable protective finish where corrosion exposure exists Zinc coating provides corrosion protection; additional finishing may still be required
Forming Select the grade for the bend, draw or stamping operation Select both the forming grade and coating specification
Visible appearance Specify surface quality and roughness for the final finish Specify zero-spangle surface quality and compatibility with the final finish
Painting or powder coating Confirm cleaning, pretreatment and coating requirements Confirm pretreatment and coating compatibility for galvanised steel
Procurement details Grade, thickness, dimensions, surface and delivery condition Grade, thickness, dimensions, surface, zinc coating mass and delivery condition

Use this comparison to shortlist a material. The appliance manufacturer’s approved specification remains the basis for the final selection.

Washing Machines: Separate Cabinet Requirements from Wet Components

A washing machine contains several material applications. Cabinet panels, brackets and internal supports should not automatically carry the same specification as components that remain in direct contact with water.

For cabinet panels, consider exposure to splashes, humidity and detergent, along with the paint or powder coating system. Tata Steelium CR may be considered where the approved protective finish provides the required corrosion performance.

Galvano may be considered where the component specification calls for zinc-coated steel. Its coating adds corrosion protection, but fabrication and finishing still require attention.

Check bends, punched holes, joints and cut edges during trials. A flat sheet sample cannot establish how the finished cabinet will perform after forming and assembly. Components with continuous wet exposure require their own material assessment.

Refrigerators: Check Condensation and Visible Finish

For refrigerator outer cabinets and doors, appearance matters alongside dimensional consistency. Surface defects, handling marks or uneven panels can become more noticeable after finishing.

Tata Steelium can be considered for components with an approved painting or coating route. Specify the required surface condition rather than ordering only by thickness.

For base panels, rear sections or other components exposed to condensation, assess whether the approved design requires Galvano. The decision depends on moisture exposure, assembly details and the complete protective finish.

Do not assume every concealed part stays dry. Equally, do not assume every refrigerator component requires galvanised steel. Review each part against its actual service conditions.

AC Units: Distinguish Indoor and Outdoor Exposure

Indoor AC components and outdoor unit casings face different environments. Outdoor equipment can encounter rain, humidity and, in some locations, salt exposure.

Where the approved casing specification calls for galvanised steel, Galvano is an option to evaluate. Confirm the required zinc coating mass, forming grade and paint system before procurement.

For protected indoor brackets or panels, Tata Steelium CR may be considered where the specified finish provides adequate protection.

Neither material choice alone establishes the corrosion performance of the complete unit. Drainage, joints, fasteners, cut edges and finishing quality also matter. Buyers should assess the fabricated component against the appliance manufacturer’s acceptance criteria.

Choose the Grade for the Forming Operation

protective coating cannot compensate for a grade that does not suit the component’s shape.

When comparing cold rolled steel grades, distinguish between straightforward bending and more demanding drawing operations. A shallow folded panel and a deeply drawn housing can require different mechanical properties.

Tata Steelium’s brochure includes commercial quality and drawing quality options, with grade-specific mechanical properties and surface roughness ranges. Galvano also offers multiple grade categories, including drawing and deeper-drawing options. Confirm the exact specification and availability for your order.

Share the component drawing, forming depth, bend radii, tooling details and acceptance criteria with the supplier. For a new material or grade, validate production samples before committing to the full quantity.

Specify Surface Finish Beyond “Smooth”

When reviewing cold rolled steel surface finish types, separate surface texture from surface quality. Roughness describes texture; scratches, dents and other imperfections affect the suitability of the surface for the finished component.

A brighter-looking sheet is not automatically the right choice for painting. Specify the surface condition that suits your pretreatment, forming and coating process.

For Tata Steelium cold rolled steel surface finish, ask for the applicable roughness range and surface acceptance requirements for the selected grade. For Galvano, confirm the required surface quality and delivery treatment alongside its zero-spangle finish.

Trial the complete finishing process. Check appearance, adhesion and coverage on formed parts, particularly around bends, corners and joints.

Compare Cost per Accepted Component

The lower sheet price does not always produce the lower finished-part cost.

Compare material cost alongside cutting yield, forming rejection, surface preparation, finishing, inspection and rework. Also consider storage conditions and protection during transport.

CR may be economical where the existing finishing process meets the component’s requirements. Galvano may justify its additional material cost where zinc protection is specified.

Use production trial results to compare cost per accepted component. Avoid assuming that switching to coated steel will remove painting or other finishing stages.

Enquire with a Complete Specification

Before ordering, prepare the component drawing and confirm:

  • Material category and approved grade.
  • Thickness, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Forming and joining requirements.
  • Surface quality and finishing process.
  • Zinc coating mass, where applicable.
  • Quantity, delivery location and required documents.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs )

Is CRCA steel suitable for home appliances?

Yes, for components whose grade, forming and protective finish requirements suit CRCA steel. Suitability depends on the individual part and its approved specification.

Is Galvano always better than CR steel?

The choice depends on corrosion exposure, fabrication and finishing requirements. Zinc-coated steel does not replace the need to select the correct forming grade.

Can Galvano be painted or powder coated?

It can be considered for these finishes with suitable surface preparation and a compatible coating system. Validate the process on the finished component.

Can one grade be used across an entire appliance?

Only where the component specifications permit it. Different parts may require different strength, formability, surface quality and corrosion protection.

Conclusion

Choose between Tata Steelium cold rolled steel and Galvano based on each appliance component’s forming, finishing and corrosion protection requirements. Confirm the grade and surface specification, then use production trials to compare quality and cost per accepted component before ordering.
