Steel Panels for MSMEs: HR vs CR vs Coated Steel: What Works Where?

Steel selection affects how a panel forms, takes a finish and performs after installation. For small manufacturers, it also influences fabrication time, rejection rates and the cost of the finished component.

When sourcing steel panels for manufacturing, MSMEs should start with the panel’s role. An internal partition, an outdoor roofing panel and a load-bearing panel require different specifications. This guide compares Tata Astrum hot rolled steel, Tata Steelium cold rolled steel and Galvano coated steel across these applications.

HR, CR and Coated Steel: What Changes?

Hot rolled steel is relevant to fabrication applications where strength, thickness and weldability are key considerations. Tata Astrum serves fabrication and construction applications through a range of grades.

Cold rolled steel suits applications that call for controlled thickness, flatness and surface quality. Tata Steelium offers these characteristics alongside formability and weldability, making it relevant to formed and finished panels.

Coated steel, in this comparison, means Galvano galvanised plain steel. Its zinc coating provides corrosion protection, while its zero-spangle surface is relevant to applications with finish requirements. Galvano is available in forming and high-strength grade categories.

These are product categories, rather than individual grades. The order must identify the grade, thickness, dimensions and surface or coating requirements.

What Works Where?

Application Material to consider Main selection criteria
Internal wall panels and partitions Tata Steelium CR Flatness, forming requirements and final finish
Forming Select the grade for the bend, draw or stamping operation Select both the forming grade and coating specification
Wall panels exposed to moisture Galvano Zinc coating, forming grade and finishing system
Profiled roofing panels Specified coated steel, with Galvano assessed against the application requirements Strength, profile, coating mass, exposure and support spacing
Heavier fabricated panels and reinforcement plates Tata Astrum HR Design strength, thickness, welding and corrosion protection
Load-bearing profiled panels Design-specified structural grade Load capacity, profile geometry, connections and coating

Use this table to shortlist the material, then match the grade to the drawing and fabrication process.

Wall Panels: Match the Grade to the Shape

Internal partitions, equipment enclosures and modular wall panels often require a consistent surface for finishing. Flatness and thickness consistency also matter when panels must align during assembly.

For straightforward folded panels, a commercial quality grade may be appropriate where the drawing permits it. Panels with drawn recesses or more demanding formed features may require drawing quality steel. Tata Steelium includes commercial and drawing quality options with different mechanical properties.

Select the grade around the actual operation. A flat panel with a few bends and a deeply formed enclosure should not automatically use the same material.

Where wall panels face humidity, condensation or occasional splashes, assess a galvanized steel sheet specification. Galvano adds zinc protection, but painting or powder coating may still form part of the approved finish.

Check folded edges, joints and fixing points alongside the visible face when evaluating the finished panel.

Roofing Panels: Match the Material to the Profile

Roofing panels must perform across their support spacing while facing weather exposure. Selection therefore involves more than choosing a corrosion-resistant sheet.

Confirm the steel grade, base metal thickness, profile dimensions, zinc coating mass and any additional finish specified for the roof. The material must also suit the manufacturer’s roll-forming process.

A galvanized plain sheet is flat feedstock, not a finished roofing profile. Where Galvano is being considered, assess the available grade and coating specification against the roof design before forming it into panels.

Uncoated CR or HR should not be selected for exposed roofing without an appropriate, validated protective system. Roof performance also depends on fastening, overlaps, drainage and installation details.

Structural Panels: Choose Strength from the Drawing

“Structural panel” can describe a load-bearing profiled sheet, a reinforced fabricated panel or an assembly that contributes to the structure. The material choice depends on which of these functions it performs.

A hot rolled steel sheet may suit heavier fabricated panels, stiffeners or reinforcement plates. When selecting hot rolled steel for fabrication, check strength, bendability, welding requirements and dimensional tolerances together.

Tata Astrum includes IS 2062 E350 options listed for fabrication and PEB applications. E350 is a structural grade designation; commercial and drawing quality labels address different material requirements. These should not be treated as interchangeable purchasing descriptions.

When comparing hot rolled steel grades, follow the grade and quality designation on the approved drawing. A higher-strength grade is not an automatic substitute, particularly where forming or welding is involved.

For structural steel for PEB projects, distinguish primary frames, secondary members and cladding panels. Each performs a different function, so approval for one component does not establish suitability for another.

FAQs

Is CR steel suitable for wall panels?

Yes. Commercial quality grades may suit straightforward folded panels, while more demanding shapes may require drawing quality steel. Select the thickness and protective finish for the application.

Can Galvano be used for roofing panels?

It can be assessed as feedstock where its grade, thickness and coating meet the specified roofing application. The finished profile and roof design must also be checked.

Is HR steel always stronger than CR steel?

No. Strength depends on the specific grade and its mechanical properties, not simply whether the steel is hot rolled or cold rolled.

Can one steel specification cover every panel in a project?

Only where the drawings permit it. Wall, roofing and load-bearing panels can have different strength, forming and corrosion protection requirements.

Conclusion

A cold rolled steel coil may suit repeat production with suitable decoiling and processing equipment. Sheets may be more practical for smaller batches, varied panel dimensions or manufacturers without a coil-processing line.

Compare usable yield, processing charges, handling requirements and storage space. A larger order is economical only when the material can be processed and consumed efficiently.

Before procurement, record:

  • Grade, thickness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Forming, welding and finishing requirements.
  • Surface quality and zinc coating mass, where applicable.
  • Coil width or sheet dimensions.
  • Quantity, delivery schedule and inspection documents.
