The MSME Builder’s Checklist: Choosing the Right Steel for Commercial Construction

A commercial building needs different steel for frames, roofing, flooring and interior fabrication. For MSMEs sourcing steel for commercial construction in India, this checklist covers material selection and procurement through DigECA.

1. Divide the Project into Material Requirements

Prepare separate purchase requirements for the main structure, secondary members, roofing, cladding, flooring and interior fabrication.

For each component, record the material standard, grade, thickness, dimensions, quantity and finish. Link these details to the latest approved drawing.

Our product categories cover Tata Astrum hot rolled steel, Tata Steelium cold rolled steel, Galvano zero-spangle galvanised steel, GalvaRoS regular-spangle galvanised steel and full hard cold rolled steel. Each serves different processing and application requirements.

Project requirement

Material category to assess

Fabricated columns, beams and base plates Specified structural HR steel

Purlins and girts

Structural-grade material suitable for forming

Roof and wall sheets

Specified coated steel and finished profile

Floor decking or steel platforms

Material matched to the designed flooring system

Electrical enclosures and metal furniture

Suitable CR or coated grades

Material for further industrial processing

Appropriate substrate, including FHCR where specified

Treat this as a starting point. The component specification determines the final selection.

2. Choose Structural Grades from the Design

For columns, rafters, beams and load-bearing brackets, begin with the structural drawing. Compare hot rolled steel grades using the complete standard, grade and subgrade.

Tata Astrum listings for PEB applications include IS 2062 E250 BR, E350 variants and ASTM A572 Grade 50 options. These cover different structural requirements and should be selected against the approved design.

When buying structural steel for PEB frames, check:

  • Specified strength and any impact-testing requirement.
  • Thickness and dimensional tolerances.
  • Welding and connection details.
  • Required material documentation.

A higher-strength grade may support a lighter design, but it does not automatically permit thinner material. Member stability, deflection and connections also affect the required section.

3. Match HR Material to Workshop Operations

Selecting hot rolled steel for fabrication also involves checking how it will be cut, bent, welded and assembled.

Choose sheet dimensions or coil widths that suit the cutting plan. Review thickness tolerance and flatness where accurate fit-up is important. For bent parts, check the grade’s forming requirements before finalising tooling.

Tata Astrum offers flatness, thickness control and consistent mechanical properties. These matter in practical operations such as positioning material for cutting and aligning parts before welding.

Decide whether a hot rolled steel sheet or coil suits the workshop. Coils require suitable handling and processing facilities; sheets may suit smaller batches or workshops without a slitting and cut-to-length line.

4. Specify Roofing and Cladding as Finished Systems

Roofing and cladding performance depends on the steel, profile, supports, fasteners and installation details.

For a galvanized steel sheet, specify the base steel grade, base metal thickness, zinc coating mass and required surface condition. Where prepainted sheets are required, include the paint system and finish.

Galvano offers a zero-spangle surface, uniform zinc coating, thickness control and paint adhesion. GalvaRoS is the regular-spangle galvanised option. Select between them using the project’s technical and finish requirements rather than appearance alone.

For purlins and girts, check structural strength and forming suitability separately. A sheet suitable for cladding may not meet the specification for a load-bearing secondary member.

5. Separate Steel Thickness from Coating Requirements

A request for “thicker galvanised steel” can mean two different things: a thicker steel base or a heavier zinc coating.

State both clearly. When comparing galvanized steel thickness, establish whether the quoted figure refers to base metal thickness or total coated thickness.

Base metal thickness affects structural and forming behaviour. Zinc coating mass relates to the protective coating and must suit the exposure specification.

Also consider roof pitch, drainage, condensation and contact with other materials. These details affect service performance alongside the selected coating.

6. Check Flooring Requirements Before Ordering Sheet

Commercial flooring may involve a concrete slab, profiled steel decking, a mezzanine platform or steel access walkways. Their material requirements differ.

For profiled decking, order against the designed profile, thickness, grade, coating and support spacing. Establish whether the deck serves as permanent formwork or forms part of a designed composite floor.

For steel platforms and walkways, check the specified plate or grating, supporting members, connections and slip resistance. A plain sheet of matching thickness is not a complete flooring specification.

Include construction-stage loads in the design review, particularly where workers, equipment or wet concrete will load the deck before the floor is complete.

7. Include Interior Fabrication in the Material Plan

Electrical enclosures, cabinets and metal furniture can require different surface and forming properties from structural components.

Tata Steelium cold rolled sheets and coils serve panel and furniture applications. Assess the selected grade for bending, drawing, dimensional requirements and the planned paint or powder-coating process. Galvano may be considered where a zinc-coated substrate is specified.

Full hard cold rolled steel is a separate processing category. Specify it only where the downstream process calls for that substrate; it should not be treated as interchangeable with annealed CR sheet.

8. Coordinate Procurement, Technical Support and Finance

For PEB steel material procurement, align deliveries with fabrication and erection stages. Compare quotations for the same grade, dimensions, processing and documentation.

Through DigECA, you can connect with authorised Tata Steel distributors, review online pricing and track order progress. Our Technical Assistance service provides access to Tata Steel specialists for grade selection, process upgrades and quality issues.

Where purchases fall ahead of project receipts, explore financing options through DigECA. Check eligibility, charges and repayment terms while planning the purchase.

Master Checklist Before You Order

  • Material list linked to approved drawings.
  • Structural grades and subgrades confirmed.
  • Sheet or coil format matched to workshop capacity.
  • Roofing and cladding profiles, grades and finishes specified.
  • Base metal thickness and coating mass stated separately.
  • Flooring material matched to the designed system.
  • Interior fabrication grades and finishes selected.
  • Quantities, documentation, delivery stages and payment terms agreed.

FAQs

Can one steel grade serve the whole building?

Structural frames, cladding and enclosures have different requirements. Follow each component’s specification.

Should coated sheets be inspected on delivery?

Yes. Check identification, dimensions, quantity and visible damage. Record discrepancies before processing.

How should steel be stored on site?

Keep it off the ground, prevent trapped moisture, separate material categories and retain identification.

Conclusion

Match each component’s grade, thickness, coating and supply format to the project requirement. Share your commercial construction requirements with us on DigECA to discuss materials and procurement.
