What Steel Grade Should You Use for Solar Mounting Structures in India?

Solar mounting structures need steel that suits the loads, member dimensions and fabrication process. Buying a higher-strength grade without reviewing these factors can add cost without improving the finished structure.

For contractors sourcing steel for solar mounting structures in India, the practical decision is whether the component requires a conventional structural grade such as E250 or a higher-strength option such as E350. Tata Astrum offers both grade families, with E350 Grade C available through DigECA for solar applications. The final choice must match the structural specification.

E250 or E350: What Should Guide the Choice?

E250 and E350 are structural steel strength grades under IS 2062. E350 has higher specified yield strength than E250 at comparable thicknesses, but that does not make it the economical choice for every component. Check the applicable mechanical requirements for the thickness being ordered.

Grade option

When to consider it

What to check

IS 2062 E250

Components designed around E250 properties, where the specified dimensions meet the loads

Full quality designation, thickness, fabrication requirements and protection

IS 2062 E350

Components where the design calls for higher yield strength or evaluates opportunities to optimise material use

Deflection, buckling, connections and forming requirements

IS 2062 E350 Grade C

Components requiring E350 strength and Grade C quality requirements

Impact-test requirements, thickness and the complete purchase specification

Do not substitute one grade for another based on price or availability alone. E250 should not replace E350 where the design requires the latter. Equally, switching to E350 does not automatically permit thinner members.

Understand the Complete Grade Designation

When ordering solar mounting structure steel, “E350” is only part of the specification. Quality designations such as A, BR, B0 and C distinguish requirements within the strength grade, including impact-test provisions.

Grade C includes impact testing at −20°C. This is a material toughness requirement, not a claim that every Indian solar project requires Grade C or that the steel is corrosion-resistant.

Tata Astrum E350 Grade C is an option where that complete designation appears in the project specification. Retain the grade and quality designation in enquiries, purchase orders and receipt checks.

Ground Mounts: Separate Members from Connection Plates

For steel for ground mounted solar structures, begin with the bill of materials. Columns, bracing, fabricated beams, base plates and gussets can have different thickness and grade requirements.

E250 may be appropriate for components designed around its properties. E350 may be selected where greater yield strength contributes to the design. However, long or slender members can be governed by deflection or buckling rather than yield strength alone.

A hot rolled steel sheet can be cut into plates, brackets or suitable fabricated members. It is not interchangeable with every tube, section or coated profile in the mounting system.

For repeat production, group orders by component, grade and thickness. This reduces the risk of using the wrong material for similar-looking parts.

Rooftop Structures: Weight Savings Need Design Validation

The choice of steel for rooftop solar structures involves the existing roof’s capacity as well as the mounting frame. Steel weight, ballast where used, wind uplift and anchorage all affect the installation.

E350 may offer an opportunity to reduce material where strength governs the design. Any proposed thickness reduction must still be validated for stiffness, buckling and connection performance.

For smaller brackets and plates, a higher-strength grade may offer little benefit if their dimensions are controlled by bolt spacing, fabrication or connection details.

Use Tata Astrum HR for the components that call for it. Keep those orders separate from rails, tubes or profiles carrying different specifications.

Agri Solar: Wider Spans Change the Decision

Agri-solar layouts often need clearance for crops, workers or machinery. Taller supports and wider spacing can increase demands on members and connections.

When choosing structural steel for solar panels in these layouts, compare grades alongside the member geometry. Higher yield strength may be useful, but it does not increase steel’s stiffness in the same proportion.

For this reason, a wider span may require a different section or support arrangement rather than simply a switch from E250 to E350.

Fabricators should also check transport lengths, lifting arrangements and joint locations before ordering. These decisions affect whether members can be manufactured and installed efficiently.

Check Forming and Corrosion Protection Separately

The choice of hot rolled steel for solar structures must suit the fabrication route. Confirm bend radii, welding requirements, hole positions and edge distances for the selected grade and thickness.

Where a grade change is proposed, trial critical formed components before full production. Tooling suitable for one material may require adjustment for another.

Corrosion protection is a separate specification. Tata Astrum HR should not be assumed to arrive as a galvanised mounting component. Where galvanising after fabrication is required, coordinate cutting, drilling, welding and coating with the fabricator and galvaniser.

For painted components, define surface preparation and the coating system before production. Higher strength does not replace protection against outdoor exposure.

Order with a Complete Material List

Before procuring Tata Astrum steel for solar mounting structures, confirm:

  • The complete standard, grade and quality designation.
  • Component thickness, dimensions and tolerances.
  • Forming and welding requirements.
  • Corrosion protection and inspection requirements.
  • Quantity, delivery location and traceability documents.

At receipt, match the mill test certificate to the material identification. Check test results against the order, then inspect dimensions and delivery condition separately.

FAQs

Is E350 always better than E250 for solar structures?

No. E350 offers higher yield strength, but the economical choice depends on member dimensions, loads, fabrication and connection requirements.

Does every solar project require Grade C?

No. Use the quality designation stated in the structural specification.

Can higher-strength steel reduce structure weight?

It may, where strength controls the design. Stiffness, buckling or connection requirements can limit weight reduction.

Can the same grade serve rooftop, ground-mount and agri-solar projects?

Yes, where each design permits it. The mounting type alone does not determine the grade or member thickness.

Conclusion

MSMEs can buy hot rolled steel through our online procurement platform, DigECA. Share the component drawing and material list to discuss grade, size and supply options.

To buy Tata Astrum hot rolled steel online, enquire with the full specification rather than “solar steel” alone. Through DigECA, we offer Tata Astrum E350 Grade C for solar applications, subject to the required dimensions and available supply.
